Our new research program on the future of Supply Chain technology
Article by Tom Serres
During the dawn of the Internet in the early 1990s, everyone watched on as the world began to adopt this brand new technology on a large scale. We believe that the Internet is once again at the beginning of a new age, specifically when it comes to Blockchain Technology, and we at Animal Ventures are excited to announce new research into the impact of this emerging tech.
Here at Animal Ventures, we combine the skills of a venture studio and a tech consultancy to help build startups and design strategies for companies that want to onboard Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things into their work streams. These emerging technologies require more than startup skills and consulting chops — they require cutting-edge research and analysis. Bettina Warburg, Tom Serres, and the AV team are bringing all of their experience — from hands-on venture builds to industry perspectives — as they embark on a new and ambitious research initiative.
But we’re not going it alone. We’re also thrilled to announce that we are teaming up with Alex and Don Tapscott, authors of the best-selling book “The Blockchain Revolution.” As well as this recent publication, Don has authored fifteen other books, which all relate to various trends in technology and society, including “Wikinomics”, “Growing Up Digital” and “The Digital Economy.”
By working together with the Tapscotts in their ambitious research syndicate the Blockchain Research Initiative, our aim is to research the potential future of Supply Chains by using a newly defined category: “Asset Chains.” Closely related to Blockchain Technology, our research has the potential to define new markets and impact the future of how societies transfer value. The research program also gives us the opportunity to try and move away from the Internet of Information and outline the opportunities in the emerging Internet of Value. Or as Don said it: “Alex and I are absolutely thrilled to expand on The Blockchain Revolution by partnering with Tom, Bettina, and the rest of the Animal Ventures crew. The research we’ll be co-producing through the Blockchain Research Institute on “Asset Chains” is going to revolutionize the way a lot of organizations do business.”
It’s no wonder that both Bettina and Tom are looking forward to collaborating with the Tapscotts and, as Tom sums it up, “We are so excited to be spearheading this landmark research study alongside our friends Don and Alex Tapscott — with some of the world’s largest and most prominent companies. Blockchain has the potential to revolutionize the way supply chains and logistical companies respond to global consumer demand for many decades to come.”

Marking a new era
At Animal Ventures, we believe that global regulatory bodies will find this research advantageous as they continually try to improve their transparency and adaptability in global supply chains. By doing so, they can then meet updated regulations with regards to anti-corruption and environmental standards for international work.
This really is an exciting time as we begin to integrate the benefits of decentralized technology forces across industries and governments. From helping to track the provenance of raw minerals and materials to fractional asset ownership once a product is made, these benefits are varied and extraordinary. As Bettina explains, this is all possible by changing how we look at supply chains: “At Animal Ventures, we have been pioneering new research into Cognitive Supply Chains — autonomous and decentralized supply chain networks that will break new ground in the way companies respond to fluctuating consumer demands. The Asset Chains research we’re pioneering with Don and Alex Tapscott will be the bedrock of understanding and taking advantage of this new worldview.”
These Asset Chains are the driving force behind our research, and are what Animal Ventures believes will provide the leverage needed for Blockchain Technology, the Industrial Internet of Thing (IIOT), and AI to mold adaptable supply chains that work in real time. By changing supply chains at their very core, we can then grow them into useful “asset chains”, which will be able to drive the lifecycle of a product with greater transparency and efficiency.
To help us bring about this shift, we will focus on the supply chains of main industries in which Blockchain is already initiating new solutions and processes. These include, amongst others, pharma, aerospace and defense, luxury goods, and digital products and assets. Through our research into asset chains and these industries, we hope to help advance various issues that have plagued supply chains to date across contracting, documentation and authentication, and logistics and, ultimately, help society adapt to the next age of the Internet.
